Terms of Use & Privacy
Last updated: 13 August 2026
Plypad is an independent project, currently offered free of charge while in active development. By creating an account, installing our software, using a Plypad device, or otherwise using Plypad, you agree to these terms.
Questions about anything below: contact@plypad.com.
Part 1 - Terms of Use
1. What Plypad is
Plypad lets you reach your own files and devices from anywhere. You run the storage on your own hardware (a Plypad device, or a PC running our software), and Plypad connects you to it through an encrypted peer-to-peer tunnel. A share link lets you give specific files to another person.
2. What we do NOT do
- We do not store your files. Transfers happen directly between your device and your browser or app, over an encrypted (DTLS/WebRTC) connection.
- Relay is transient. When a direct connection is not possible, traffic may pass through our encrypted relay only to complete the connection. Relay is best-effort and rate-limited. It is not hosting, backup, a CDN, or a general proxy or VPN.
- We do not sell your data, and we do not run ad tracking.
- Plypad is not a backup service.
3. Your account and security
- Give accurate sign-up information and keep it current.
- You are responsible for your password, device pairing codes, share links, and access tokens, and for everything done through your account.
- Tell us at contact@plypad.com if you think someone gained access.
- You are responsible for the security of your own devices, networks, and local passwords.
4. Acceptable use - what you agree to do and not do
You agree not to:
- use Plypad for anything illegal, or to store, transfer, or share content you have no right to;
- upload or spread malware, or interfere with, overload, or disrupt Plypad or its infrastructure;
- abuse the relay (as a general proxy, VPN, or CDN) or try to get around fair-use limits by automated means;
- try to access devices, accounts, or content that are not yours, or bypass authentication, access controls, or rate limits;
- misrepresent your identity or a device's identity.
You agree to use Plypad lawfully and to respect other people's rights.
5. Your content
- You own your content. We claim no ownership of it.
- You are responsible for your content and for having the right to store, transfer, and share it.
- Share links are sensitive. Anyone with a valid, unexpired link can reach the content behind it, so treat links like keys.
- To operate the service we need a limited permission to transmit and briefly relay your content only as needed to complete the connection you ask for - nothing more, and never for any other purpose.
6. Free service and availability
- Plypad is provided free and on a best-effort basis. We work hard to keep it reliable, secure, and available.
- Connectivity depends on your devices, networks, and internet providers, which are outside our control.
7. Devices and updates
If you use Plypad hardware or our software, it may receive automatic over-the-air updates to add features, fix bugs, or address security. By using it you agree to receive those updates.
8. Changes and ending use
- You can stop using Plypad and delete your account at any time.
- We may update these terms. If a change is significant, we will give reasonable notice (by email or on plypad.com). Continuing to use Plypad after that means you accept the update.
- We may suspend access that breaks these terms or creates risk for others.
9. Resolving issues
If something goes wrong, email contact@plypad.com first and we will try to sort it out in good faith.
Part 2 - Privacy
Our privacy approach follows from the architecture: your files live on your hardware, and we never see their contents.
1. What we never see or process
- The contents of your files. They travel directly between your devices and, when relayed, pass through encrypted and are not stored by us.
- No advertising profiles, no sale of your data.
2. What we do process (and why)
To run Plypad we handle a small amount of technical and account data:
- Account data - your email address (from sign-up, or from Google / Apple sign-in). If you use Apple's "Hide My Email", we receive Apple's relay address.
- Device identifiers - IDs that pair your devices to your account.
- Connection metadata - the technical data needed to establish a connection (for example IP addresses and timestamps during signaling) and basic security logs.
We use this only to operate and secure the service and to let you sign in and reach your devices.
3. Who else is involved (third parties)
- Sign-in providers - Google and Apple, if you choose to sign in with them (subject to their own privacy policies).
- Our relay/TURN servers - operated by us, to complete connections when direct peer-to-peer is not possible.
- Email - our email provider, used to send account and verification messages.
- Hosting - our servers are hosted in Germany (EU) and the United States.
4. Cookies
We use a session cookie to keep you signed in and to protect against abuse. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
5. How long we keep data
- Account data - while your account exists; deleted when you delete your account.
- Connection metadata and security logs - kept only briefly, for operating and securing the service.
6. Children
Plypad is not intended for anyone under 16 (or the age of digital consent in your country).
7. International transfers
Depending on where you are, your data may be processed in a different country from where you live (for example, between the EU and the United States). We handle it under these terms regardless of where it is processed.
8. Changes and contact
We may update this privacy section; significant changes will be announced as described in the Changes section above. Questions or requests about your data: contact@plypad.com.
